Charlie!

George and I were on our way to Mariachi Coco’s tonight (OH so Mexilicious!), driving down Pettibone Road towards SOM. Suddenly, we noticed a pudgy dog with a leash and no person plodding down the road. He turned to cross SOM, and we both gasped and covered our eyes as a car barreld down on him. Fortunately, he stepped back in time! The car never even slowed down.

We quickly agreed we had to do something, so I proceeded across SOM, pulled up along side him, and George jumped out. I turned down a side street and parked. George stopped the doggie by standing on his leash. Wish I had a camera out to get the picture. George matter-of-factly standing on the leash looking at the dog with a grin, and the dog looking back like “Hey! Yer on my leash!”

I called the police to report the loose dog, and we waited patiently in the cold for a police car to arrive. The doggie was friendly and chubby. I think he MAY have been a corgi/beagle mix. His legs were way too short for his barrel shaped body, and he had a VERY beagle face, complete with the long floppy ears. He was white with big tan blotches. He had no tag, but was obviously well taken care of, and very friendly.

Trotting around, looking lovingly at George who was giving him a good back & belly scratch, “Hi! I just peed on that pole! Wanna see? You smell like a cat. Are you a cat? I like cats. You’re a pretty big cat!”

After a while he started pulling at the leash towards SOM again. We guessed he may have been trying to go home, but rather than take the time to try and sniff out his house, we decided it was best to wait for the police car. But then, a car stopped in the road:

Guy in the car: “Is that Charlie?!”
George and Me: “Um we dont know…do you know him?”
Girl in car: “Charlie? Is that you? Hey Charlie!”

Turns out they knew the owner, and our guess is they were helping out on the lost dog patrol. They looked dressed for a party, so Charlie sure has some nice friends, taking the time away from a party on a Saturday night to find him 🙂 Our guess was right on his tug…he DOES live in a house on SOM. And these folks were going to take him right home! Charlie looked happy. “Nice hanging out with you two, but it’s cold. See you later, cats!”

The police car pulled up just as they were loading Charlie in the car. We explained the situation and he seemed as relieved as the rest of us.

A truly feel-good kind of an evening.
