SO sleepy.

In high school, I could never fall asleep until at least midnight. I would often sit in my room and read or listen to music until I dozed off. In college, I would regularly pull all nighters for no reason. I was a total night owl, but I will never declare I was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the start. I remember when at home on breaks, it would take great force to get me out of bed before noon, and I sometimes made it to 2 p.m. But after the initial groggy grouchiness, I was good for the day. Felt good, felt rested, and was pretty durn productive.

But these days, with having to get to a job every morning, and the added bonus that I try to wake up early enough to go to the gym before hand, I have completely lost my “Night Owl” status. For quite a few years I was able to get by pretty well on 4-6 hours of sleep a night. But now, sitting on the couch after dinner watching the Food Network, George often has to elbow me to stop the snoring. We try to go to sleep early, but there’s still that little teenage voice in the back of my head that whispers “It’s not time yet…you don’t want to go to bed yet…there’s so much to do…” So I don’t get to bed until midnight, have to wake up early, and the vicious circle continues.

And then there was this weekend.

New Year’s Eve we didn’t go to sleep until about 3 a.m. New Year’s Day we slept till noon and took a 2 hour nap at noon. Then neither of us could fall asleep, so bedtime didn’t come until nearly 4 a.m. I declared that today we would wake up at a decent hour, fill ourselves with coffee, and refuse to nap so that we can get back on a normal schedule.

We got up by 11, but I’ve been dragging all day. Even sleeping in on New Year’s Day and today didn’t make me feel better. In fact, I felt worse. Headache, lack of focus and motivation… The nap the other day did in fact wake me up, but it sabotaged the next day. UGH!

New Year’s Resolution #2

REALLY try to get to sleep between 10 and 11 each night.

Let’s see how this one works out.
